Whiplash is a type of neck injury commonly caused by an RTA (Road traffic accident) where there is sudden movements of the head in multiple directions. This leads to pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders.

  • Road traffic accidents and collisions
  • A sudden blow to the head
  • A slip or fall where the head is suddenly jolted backwards
  • Being struck on the head by a heavy or solid object

Symptoms of whiplash can occur several hours after the injury and are commonly worse in the initial 24/48 hours. Although symptoms can persist longer than this.

  • Neck pain and tenderness
  • Neck stiffness and reduced neck movements
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pain in the shoulders and arms

  • Keep your neck moving and continue with your normal activities – using a neck brace or collar is not advisable.
  • Keep your pain under control with pain relief. This can be discussed further with your GP or pharmacist.
  • If your symptoms persist seek advice from your GP and if required a referral to physiotherapy to aid your recovery.
