What is it?
Kinesiology taping is a method of taping which uses elasticated taping which is applied to skin to aid recovery from injury. It differs from other taping methods as it moulds to the skin and can be worn for much longer up to 5 days. The inventor of Kinesio tape reports as using it to ‘keep his hands on’ his patients after treatment.
How does it work?
It works on many levels from affecting pain signals and offloading pain receptors via the skin to altering fascial strain forces as well and providing more room for fluid movement. Research is constantly evolving both for and against the effects of tape but more importantly patients get results.
Does it matter what direction the tape is?
It is taught in the classes that different directions can activate or inhibit muscles, different styles of cut can affect fluid drainage and the more stretch equals more support. The evidence base isn't there to prove this yet however one size does not fit all therefore we’ll focus the tape around what your body prefers.
Ask your physiotherapist if this treatment may help you.
