Why is this important?
As part of the NHS family, we must meet the legal requirements set out in the Climate Change Act 2008 and deliver the targets set in the NHS Long term Plan. These include being net zero by 2040 for the emissions we control directly with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028 and being net zero by 2045 for the emissions we can influence with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2036.
We at MCH need to embrace new ways of working in order to be able to achieve these targets. We need to meet our needs of today without compromising our ability to meet the needs of tomorrow.
Key Targets for this year:
All our 24/25 targets are attached as appendixes in our Green Plan which can be found on Bob. Some of these key targets are below:
- Protecting and promoting biodiversity across all locations, only mowing verges and lawns when necessary and using no chemicals or pesticides.
- Promote EV/hybrid car use and begin the implementation of EV charging points across the workplace.
- Reduce our consumption in all ways possible, including our utilities consumption, eg, by switching off lights and devices when not in use, reducing paper and ink consumption, phasing out single use plastics, reducing paper towel usage etc.
- Sustainability training will be implemented across MCH and Green Champions and Sustainability Groups will be set up.
